What is the Real Meaning of Life?

Updated: Feb 11, 2019

Being human, not to be confused with that ridiculous SyFy show about vampires, werewolves, and ghosts, is complicated. What is life really all about? What is the point?

Those who don’t know God answer this with “you’re born, you pay taxes, you die”. Atheists are really the most hopeless bunch. While others believe life is simply to fulfill some cosmic purpose designed by a bunch of cruel and immoral deities and when it’s over we pass through another birth canal on our way to the next life in order to do it all again….well until we achieve “enlightenment”.

According to Houghton and Mifflin, enlightenment is defined as the blessed state in which the individual transcends desire and suffering and attains Nirvana; Nirvana is defined as being the place in which one attains disinterested wisdom and compassion. I define it as their own narcissistic form of reality where they achieve oneness with their own self centered universe. This comes about by a great deal of self denial in order to make them feel good about themselves and a whole lot of useless platitudes like “before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves”, or “ignorance is the night of the mind, but a night without moon and star’ and my personal favorite “respect yourself and others will respect you.”

I once took a Yoga class, that I have sworn off ever after, in which the instructor told us to “breath in the fear”. WHAT?? Who would be so idiotic as to want to do that? These so called “enlightened” folks must smoke a lot of weed to think we are that stupid. That is definitely not thinking positive.

The Age of Enlightenment hit its stride in the 18th century and has led us down the path to one of the most spiritually arrested and emotionally bleak times in our history. Sure there has always been world wide poverty, hardship and natural disasters, but self indulgence, drug abuse and rampant promiscuity has never been more wide spread than it is today. None of these activities affords us any true happiness, peace or joy. In fact, many have deluded themselves into believing our own pleasure is the place in which the meaning of our life is derived.

In the words of Solomon, the noted author of Ecclesiastes, “life is useless, all useless”. (Ecclesiastes 1: 2).

Since the world began someone has been searching for the meaning of life. This experiment is still ongoing and according to the bible very few ever find the real meaning of any of it. What I find significant in the book of Ecclesiastes is Solomon, having tried everything, found the true meaning in life is God; and not just any god, but Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Solomon concludes this masterpiece with….

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

In addition to keeping His commands, what else does God require of us? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8.

But why? Why should God care at all about what we do? For what purpose has man been given long days and pointless nights?

After well over 15 years of seriously studying God’s Word the meaning has become crystal clear. This beautiful, yet tormented existence is a long, intensive test of our moral character and commitment to God. Do you have the intestinal fortitude to bravely face suffering and the temptations in life and come out on the other side with your moral character in tact? It isn’t easy and that’s an understatement.

The next question is always – why test our character at all? Ironically enough, it isn’t for today, tomorrow, or really anytime in our earthly life. God is making for Himself a “kingdom of priests” (Exodus 19: 6, Revelation 1:6). Not just for now as expressed in Exodus, but for an eternity as expressed in Revelation. To me this is so obvious. It isn’t spelled out in a step by step format, but it is woven into all the books of the bible; this underlying reason that permeates every Word. God is intending to begin again with a new heaven and a new earth. One in which He intends to put His most cherished saints in charge of this new creation. A creature that has been tested and found to be worthy. A place where we walk together with God’s Holy angels and we are involved in the judgment process….

Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 1 Corinthians 6:3

So with that said, all things judged and with a new heaven and a new earth created, imagine all you Scifi fans if you can, a universe full of life, glorious and resplendent, with creatures so remarkable that it makes the Cambrian period on earth look like child’s play. This will be a new heaven and earth created by a God who loves nothing more than to create and to bless His creation.

And who will be put in charge to make sure everything runs smoothly and within God design? Well it will be you – the Saints – who make it through the dark night of life’s temptations and tribulations. It will be all of you who answer the call and honor Him with your selfless sacrifice and integrity in spite of all that comes against you.

You can also be sure of one other thing; the closer you draw to God the bigger target you become to the evil ones in this world. God never said it would be easy, in fact, Jesus said “in this world you will have troubles” (John 16:33). And contrary to the New Age Tele-Evangelists Jesus DIDN’T come to make your life a walk through the daisies; it’s really more like roses, it can be very beautiful but it is a lot of work and is full of painful thorns.

Saints - make a copy of this and put it in your bible or hang it on your refrigerator. It will help you to remember that your life is far more valuable than you could ever imagine and your dedication to doing what is right may go completely unnoticed and insignificant to those around you – it is just the beginning for a future full of rewards that await you in eternity.

And for all you atheists out there that think everything ends at your last breath; you will be in for one serious surprise. Don’t waste your precious days indulging your hopelessness and self pity – get on board with God’s plan. It will totally be worth it and it WILL change your life – for the better and in ways you could have never imagined.
