The term Extraterrestrial (ET) life has really become a mainstream concept with all the movies, TV programs, books, magazines, statements made by former NASA astronauts and UFO researchers pushing their enlightened, albeit secular agenda on the rest of the unsuspecting populace. But what does it all mean to Christianity? Would finding a little green man really change your position on Jesus?
Therefore God exalted Him [Jesus] to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11, NIV, emphasis mine.
In the light of this very interesting scripture verse, when put into a more complete context it has many implications for not only angels and demons, but any other “creatures” that could be found throughout our universe. This verse leaves no wiggle room for ET’s to be exempt from this biblical requisite. Although many opinions of the ET phenomenon exist, the Christian church seems to be nearly silent on the topic. Those that attempt to make a biblical interpretation of their existence are quickly brushed off as fanatics and members of the lunatic fringe; their credibility as a legitimate theologian within the Christian community completely destroyed. Well, since I obviously could care less about my own credibility (as confirmed in the fact that I wrote this at all) I would like to embark on the taboo subject of ET’s.
As a Christian Why Should I Care?
Exotheology, now here is a new word for your religious lexicon! What is it anyway? “‘Exotheology’, that is, the discipline that is concerned with the theological reflection on the possibility of extraterrestrial life.” [ 1] We as Christians can not divorce ourselves from the phenomenon’s that exist around us; we are called to be in the world, but not of the world. We should search the scriptures daily to ensure that we are never, at any time, led astray by the world’s philosophies and dogmas. This includes our own Christian philosophies as well. Every bible teaching has with it someone’s interpretation of Scripture; we should always be sure our conclusions line up with Gods Word. As the world discusses these strange happenings, we need to be prepared and ready to engage in this dialogue. There is no room for us to be left out of this conversation.
An unbiblical world view of this predicament is beginning to take shape and in the book Gods, Genes and Consciousness, Paul Von Ward gave his very educated and secular opinion on the topic:
"The use of 'light/darkness'metaphor to divide the angel and human followers of different gods into 'good and evil' categories seems to go deeper than just name-calling. Although [Andrew] Collins [author of “From Ashes to Angels”[ 2] ] does not reach a conclusion identical to mine from the same material, his tracing of the evolution in India and Persia from neutral angels to good and evil ones helps answer our questions. Yes, the story of Sin and Satan’s origins (along with the demonization of certain angels) did start with conflicts between two AB [advanced beings a.k.a. ET] camps. Yes, the labels did relate to different AB policies toward humans. But, given today’s hindsight, it turns out the apparent good guys were really bad guys. The AB and human winners in the policy debate described by Enoch took positive labels for themselves and tagged their opponents (those favoring full access to knowledge for human independence and self-development) with words like devils, sinners and demons." [ 3] (Emphasis mine)
Ruth Montgomery, author of Aliens Among Us speaks volumes with her revelations placed prominently on the front cover of her book: “Dazzling true testimony that extraterrestrials are on earth – about to usher in the New Age…”. Is she insane? It’s possible, but she isn’t alone in her experiences. There are many so called abductees and contactees who share her opinion in the “aliens” mission here on earth. Ms. Montgomery has alien friends that she calls “guides” that assist her in reaching her philosophical, New Age conclusions. Does that sound familiar? The Native Americans of North America have a long standing belief in spirit guides; as do many other religious and New Age belief systems around the globe.
It is this writer’s firm belief that there is a strong correlation between demonic activity, ancient mythology and that of the so called “aliens” and their Nephillim offspring. In our daily battle with the enemy, we should never be “unaware of [Satan’s] schemes” (2 Corinthians 2:11) no matter how unlikely or strange they may seem to us. In an attempt that you not be caught unaware or misguided by those who do not have a biblical world view, I will go into more detail on what I think the bible has to say about them, what they are, what they are up to and what their future holds for us as a unique race created in the image of God.
What does the Bible Say About UFO’s?
Does the bible mention these “alien” creatures at all? Remember that strange Genesis story of “mighty men who were of old”….
When men began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair, and they took wives of all they desired and chose. Then the Lord said, My Spirit shall not forever dwell and strive with man, for he also is flesh; but his days shall yet be 120 years. There were giants on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God lived with the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. Genesis 6:1-4.
The “sons of God” in this verse in Hebrew is “benei Elohim” which is the term used for angels. It is also used again in Job 1:6, 2:1, and 38:7 in reference to the angelic hosts of heaven. So, what we have here is a group of angels who came to earth, cohabitated with a bunch of women and had offspring? As appalling as that may sound and as unpopular as this belief is in the Christian community that IS what it says. We could dismiss it as just a misrepresentation or a misprint or attempt to explain it as the “sons of Seth” interpretation [ 4], but it defies any simple explanation. Secular books like Return of the Gods by Erich von Däniken and Stairway to Heaven by Zecharia Sitchin explain this as the Ancient Astronaut Theory in which you will find an interesting correlation between what they have to say and what is depicted in this outrageous Genesis story.
The fallen angels that produced these creatures that the bible calls Nephilim may be the missing link in our so called UFO explanation. Not ET’s in the sense that they came from some far off distant galaxy but from a different dimension or heavenly realm altogether. This dimension reserved for God’s angelic hosts is one that we in our own dimension can not fathom and may harbor these more sinister fallen beings which from time to time make an appearance in our own world.

UFO’s & Mythology, Part II

Ancient Mythology and the Worship of Idols!
Nearly every civilization across the globe has a similar account of early, ancient history. The common denominators include a similar creation story, visitations by gods from other worlds, rebellious so-called deities, offspring produced by their unions (demi-gods), worship of these gods and demi-gods, a world wide flood, and similar names and/or origins of their deities. Of course the exact details of each culture differ greatly; however the similarities can not be overlooked.
The Babylonian Epic of Creation a.k.a. the Enuma Elish , the story of Gilgamesh and a wide variety of mythology throughout the world either share a similar origin or have been distributed by a common denominator. In either case, it would seem that these stories trend toward the absurd, even scientifically impossible, yet they have existed for thousands and thousands of years. Could there be a drop of truth to any of it?
The New Testament writers share some similar beliefs of those who worshiped the God’s of Greco-Roman mythology and used similar terminology when discussing idol worship, demons and false gods.
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell [tartaroō], putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; (2 Peter 2:4, NIV, emphasis mine)
Tartaroō, in Greek ταρταρόω. It is the verb form of “Tartarus” (1) to send to hell hold captive in Tartarus: a derivative of the Greek noun “Tartarus” a place of torture and torment lower than Hades in Greek and Jewish apocalyptic literature. [ 5] Tartarus was a Greek God and the name used by them for the underworld. Tartarus is also referred to in Enoch 20:3 as a place where fallen angels are confined.[ 6] I don’t think Peter was making a comparison here and I don’t think he was trying to appeal to the Greeks within their realm of cultural understanding. I think he was saying exactly what he meant. Tartarus is a real place, a place set apart to hold the worst of the worst, in this case fallen angels, and its location is lower than Hades. The Old Testament Hebrew equivalent for this word is Sheol. I find it interesting that Peter used tartaroō instead of Sheol and that if it had needed further explanation Peter would have been perfectly capable of giving a more clear and precise definition of Sheol to his audience, but he didn’t, he used tartaroō.
Moving along, Jesus said to Peter as he was revealing His plan for Peter’s life, “And I tell you that you are Peter [his name means rock], and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” (Matthew 16:18, NIV, emphasis mine)
O death, where is thy sting? O grave (Hades), where is thy victory? (1 Corinthians 15:55, KJV, emphasis mine)
I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. (Revelation 1:18, NIV, emphasis mine)
I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth. (Revelation 6:8, NIV, emphasis mine)
Other references to Hades include Matthew 11:23, Luke 16:23, Acts 2:27, Acts 2:31, Revelation 20:13 and 20:14.
In Greek mythology, Hades is the oldest male child of Cronus and Rhea. According to myth he and his brothers Zeus and Poseidon defeated the Titans and claimed rulership over the universe ruling the underworld, air, and sea, respectively; the solid portion of the earth’s surface belonged to the goddess Gaia. Because of Hades association with the underworld, he is often thought of as the Grim Reaper.
Again, was Jesus trying to speak in terms that the Greek people and those residing in the culture of that day would understand? Or was he saying what He meant to say. Did Matthew re-write Jesus’ words? Did John the author of Revelation pen what he thought people would understand, or was he simply repeating the words that Jesus had spoken? Did Paul the author of 1 Corinthians simply use a familiar term in order to get his point across?
These are all questions that have been debated for a very long time by theologians around the world. Regardless of opinions and putting all debate aside, to Jesus, Matthew, John, Paul and the Greeks of that time the term Hades was not only a real place, but a real individual. It is also no secret that the apostles and the Early Church viewed these self appointed Greek deities as demonic in origin.
A Modern Twist on an Ancient god
Is there a link between these ancient deities and the current UFO phenomenon that we seem to be encountering in our modern era? Erich von Däniken the leading proponent of the controversial Ancient Astronaut Theory, in his extremely popular book Chariots of the Gods? makes some startling, albeit completely off the biblical mark, conclusions.
"Let us suppose that foreign astronauts visited the territory of the Sumerians thousands of years ago. Let us assume that they laid the foundations of the civilization and culture of the Sumerians and then returned to their own planet after giving this stimulus to development. Let us postulate that curiosity drove them back to the scene of their pioneer work every hundred terrestrial years….If we look at the Sumerians with ‘space eyes’ it teems with questions and enigmas beside which the terrors of the deep and the wonders of the heavens pale in insignificance."[ 7] (Emphasis mine)
Later in this same book he poses the question and titles Chapter 4, “Was God an Astronaut?”[ 8]
His theories sound too outlandish to even be considered by most credible modern theologians and his radical theory could never fit at all into a biblical world view, but let’s review the biblical evidence for a moment: something strange happened in Genesis 6:1-4, angels seem to come and go as they please, angels can take on flesh while looking and acting very human, angels have the ability to go about undetected, they can kill and destroy as directed, they have superior strength, knowledge, wisdom and technology, and in many cases act in the capacity of warriors ready to do battle. So with their superior intellect and power, do these fallen angelic hosts really need space craft to get them from point A to point B? Or was it their offspring, the Nephillim, who were in need of quick and reliable transportation?
The bible is unclear on exactly “how” angelic beings move between the dimensions of the heavenly realms and earth and if they are capable of moving throughout the known physical universe without physical assistance at all. The vision of Jacob’s ladder in Genesis 28:12 showed angels ascending and descending but still does not tell us much, other than they come and go as God sees fit. It’s not likely (but not an impossibility) that an angel created as spirit but can take on flesh in our physical world would need some sort of mode of transportation. But what is much more plausible is that their offspring, not inheriting the same spiritual and physical capabilities as their fallen angelic fathers, would need some means of transportation to avoid the wrath of God as in the flood of Noah and “also afterward” when most were destroyed as the Israelites possessed the land of Canaan.
You made [man] a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. (Psalm 8:5, NIV) With this verse in mind and knowing that these Nephillim creatures could have been assisted by a created being that was a little higher on the creation scale than man, the conclusion that we could draw from this is their technology would be a little higher than ours also.

UFO's & Encounters! Part III

Documented History of UFO Encounters!
There have been many documented encounters of UFO’s and their occupants throughout history. Many of these documented, multiple sightings involve very credible multiple witnesses such as military officials, police officers, astronauts and yes, even several Presidents of the United States.
Encounters are of the first, second and third kind. First kind encounters involve visual sightings, second kind encounters involve trace evidence left behind by the vehicle and/or the occupants and third kind involve direct contact. Many of the so called sightings have been later found to be hoaxes. There is a great deal of misinformation and disinformation that has been deliberately spread in our media and on the internet by the US government and various sources. No one ever wants to admit they simply don’t know or have no explanation, this includes the US government. I personally don’t believe they are malicious in their intent to misinform, they simply aren’t prepared for wide scale panic and confusion as a result of their admission of the truth. Be that as it may, lets move on to more verifiable sightings.
Encounters of the first kind are what we most associate with “alien” activity. Sightings involve being plotted on radar; unexplainable lights in the sky, on the ground and even on the moon; craft of some kind sighted in the air, on land and in the ocean. It has been suggested that these craft are hiding themselves deep within our oceans to avoid detection.
"I don't laugh at people any more when they say they've seen UFOs. I've seen one myself!" - Jimmy Carter on the campaign trail in 1976. [ 9]
During an interview with Norman C. Miller the then Washington DC bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal, Ronald Reagan describes his 1974 encounter with a UFO: "I looked out the window and saw this white light. It was zigzagging around. I went up to the pilot and said, ‘Have you ever seen anything like that?’ He was shocked and he said, ‘Nope.’ And I said to him: ‘Let's follow it!’ We followed it for several minutes. It was a bright white light. We followed it to Bakersfield, and all of a sudden to our utter amazement it went straight up into the heavens. When I got off the plane I told Nancy all about it." [ 10]
It is also interesting to note here that President Richard M. Nixon after his election didn’t deny the existence of UFO’s, he simply stated to the press: “I'm not at liberty to discuss the government’s knowledge of extraterrestrial UFO's at this time. I am still personally being briefed on the subject!" [ 11]
Other well documented cases include the Phoenix lights caught on video and photographed by multiple witnesses including multiple radar sightings and those who witnessed these events claim that the Air Force scrambled fighter jets. The US government has failed to give an explanation for the USAF presence. These lights were sighted from Casa Grande to Prescott, Arizona. It later made front page news in USA Today, titled “Arizonans say the truth about UFO is out there” by reporter Richard Price. Included with this front page article was one of the many photos taken of the craft and their associated lights.
“I'll never be the same,” Bill Greiner, 51, a cement truck driver, says. He was hauling a load down a mountain north of Phoenix when he saw two brilliantly lit orbs, shaped like spinning tops. “Before this, if anybody'd told me they saw a UFO, I would've said, `Yeah, and I believe in the tooth fairy.'”
"So what did Greiner and everybody else see? That question has rattled around this state for three months. Officials at Luke Air Force Base in nearby Glendale are bombarded with calls for an investigation, even though the U.S. government is officially out of the UFO business." – USA Today , June 18, 1997 [ 12]
Great Britain’s Ministry of Defence continues to periodically release files documenting UFO encounters available through the UK’s National Archives. Of course, there is nothing substantial or even verifiable, just the multiple testimonies of those who experienced these encounters.
The Rendlesham Forest case is undoubtedly one of the best documented and most significant military encounters with a UFO. It is also very credible incident. The incident spanned four days in 1980. Rendlesham Forest is a large pine forest, east of Ipswich, in Suffolk, England. Nearby are the twin NATO air bases, RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge; at the time both bases were being leased to the United States Air Force. Several UFO incidents, including multiple-witness sightings by military personnel, ground traces, and radioactive anomalies were reported from Rendlesham forest. According to USAF security patrolmen on duty, "the object was described as being metallic in appearance and triangular in shape, approx. 2-3 meters across the base... it illuminated the entire forest with a white light, and had a pulsing red light on top and a bank(s) of blue lights underneath." In November, 2002, the British Ministry of Defense released the "Rendlesham File" of documents related to and confirming the Rendlesham Forest incident. [ 13]
Encounters of the second kind leave tangible, trace evidence of their presence somewhere on the person involved in the encounter, on land or in the water. These encounters usually go hand-in-hand with encounters of the first and third kind. The most famous second kind encounter was an incident that took place in Shag Harbor, Nova Scotia. As many as 11 people saw an object which at the time was thought to have been an aircraft crash into the waters off the shores of Shag Harbor. The Canadian Navy and the US Coast Guard responded to the report in which no physical debris or personnel were ever “officially” found, however a yellow-foam like froth was recovered. In addition, no aircraft were ever reported missing in the area. [ 14] In a documentary called Canada’s Roswell which aired on the History Channel, it was reported that divers from both the US and Canadian Navy were dispatched to the area where they collected samples of the yellow foam-like froth and took photographs of the unknown objects below. When they were subsequently called away to check on a Russian submarine that had entered allied waters to the north, the unknown objects that had been observed on the ocean floor departed. [ 15]
Some close encounters of the second kind include these strange geometrical shapes carved into the fields around the world and are infamously known as crop circles. Crop circles have been associated with this kind of event because unknown lights and other mysterious, supernatural events have been observed at the same time. I will not go into detail concerning this kind of encounter because, at this time, it has very little relevance to our discussion. Additionally, many crop circles have been found to be hoaxes.
Encounters of the third kind give us a more definite inkling into what their sinister plans seem to be. These third kind encounters are most always described as frightening, sexual, intrusive, experimental and/or informative. The “information” derived from these encounters never, ever points toward a loving God who created the universe. It almost always is more transcendental in the approach: We have the power within us to be like a god or goddess. Does that sound familiar? Adam and Eve were brought down with that very same argument. Of these encounters, none seem to be more repugnant than that of the third kind.
Dr. Chuck Missler in his ministry attempts to put a biblical view on the whole UFO phenomenon. In Alien Encounters co-authored with Mark Eastman, they say,
"A recurring theme in the abduction scenario is the delivery of detailed messages to abductees. The messages delivered to abductees are typically done by telepathic (mind to mind) conversation....In some cases, abductees report being shown scenes or messages on large screens within the alien craft. These messages are usually horrific prophetic scenarios about impending cataclysmic events on Earth and the destruction of Earth due to environmental degradation. In some cases overt religious messages are given to abductees. These messages can include the notion that the aliens are our creators, that they are trying to advance our evolution through these breeding experiments, and that mankind must unify-with their assistance-into a system of global governance and religion in order to survive the future cataclysms." [16]
Abduction cases often include medical and scientific experiments performed on those who have been abducted. Dr. Jacques Vallée, a former French astrologer, author, leading UFO researcher and a collaborator on the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, has not gone on the record as saying UFO’s are demonic in origin but he does affirm that abduction reports parallel medieval tales of demonic encounters. He has reported on many of these cases and his description of such events seems to sum it all up,
"The 'medical examination' to which abductees are said to be subjected, often accompanied by sadistic sexual manipulation, is reminiscent of the medieval tales of encounters with demons. It makes no sense in a sophisticated or technical framework: any intelligent being equipped with the scientific marvels that UFOs possess would be in a position to achieve any of these alleged scientific objectives in a shorter time and with fewer risks."- [ 17]
The face of “aliens” with the large oval eyes, huge head, small mouth and slits for a nose took root in our culture on the cover of Whitley Strieber’s now world famous novel Communion. In this book he details his experiences with what he describes as “visitors”. His accounts are terrifying and horrific. He has received a great deal of criticism for writing this and many other books on this very topic.[ 18] In his book Transformation, he describes his encounters in the following way,
"I felt an absolutely indescribable sense of menace. It was hell on earth to be there [in the presence of the entities], and yet I couldn't move, couldn't cry out, couldn't get away. I'd lay as still as death, suffering inner agonies. Whatever was there seemed so monstrously ugly, so filthy and dark and sinister. Of course they were demons. They had to be. And they were here and I couldn't get away." [ 19]

UFO’s & the Future, Part IV

What Does the Future Hold for this Phenomenon?
Bizarre, UFO worshipping religions, like the Raelian Church exist now and have existed in the ancient past. More recently, contactees seem to share an eerily similar message: ET’s created us and the creatures on our planet by manipulating the DNA of their own species; we are headed for catastrophe of our own making and they are planning to intercede when the time is right and they are going to return to assist us, but only those who will comply with their way of thinking.
It begs the question: Who created them?
Jacque Vallée made this very prophetic statement in his book “Dimensions”,
"I think the stage is set for the appearance of new faiths, centred on the UFO belief. To a greater degree than all phenomena modern science is confronting, the UFO can inspire awe, the sense of the smallness of man, and an idea of the possibility of contact with the cosmic. The religions we have briefly surveyed began with the miraculous experiences of one person, but today there are thousands for whom the belief in otherworldly contact is based on intimate conviction, drawn from what they regard as personal contact with UFOs and their occupants." – [ 20]
There are some who believe that the anti-Christ and the amazing “signs and wonders” that he will perform could only be performed by one of these so called “demi-gods” of ancient times.
And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of everyone. Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. It was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. Revelation 13:13-15, NIV
This is not smoke and mirrors; this is real power. To give life to an “image” would be quite a feat for any magician, but this is no magician. He possesses the power of the ancient dragon, Satan himself. In the last days or the fourth kingdom depicted by Daniel, he describes it in this way,
"Then there will be a fourth kingdom as strong as iron; inasmuch as iron crushes and shatters all things, so, like iron that breaks in pieces, it will crush and break all these in pieces.
"In that you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but it will have in it the toughness of iron, inasmuch as you saw the iron mixed with common clay.
"As the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of pottery, so some of the kingdom will be strong and part of it will be brittle.
"And in that you saw the iron mixed with common clay, they will combine with one another in the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, even as iron does not combine with pottery.
"In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever.
"Inasmuch as you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold, the great God has made known to the king what will take place in the future; so the dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy." (Daniel 2:40-45, NASB. Emphasis mine)
Only time will tell when these unbelievable predictions will come to pass, some have said these things have already taken place, but I would disagree. I feel this is a future prediction of the end times and it is my desire that you will not go boldly into the future unaware of the possibilities. In a world where information on any subject we desire to learn about is literally at our fingertips it is no doubt a harrowing ordeal to undertake the search for the truth. In our new age of moral relativism and the truth is relative to your own perspective it is no wonder that we suffer greatly from our inability to discern the truth. So the Judeo-Christian God of our bible gave us many great prophets who wrote down the truth for us so we could have a compass to point us in the right direction. And God still sends a prophet from time to time to help us along the way,
"We believe that the cultural preparations (or deliberate conditioning) of the world to view our alien visitors as powerful and highly evolved saviours makes the UFO phenomena the perfect motif for the Antichrist to exploit when he ascends to power. His ability to perform supernatural signs and wonders, his comprehensive plan for the peaceful unification of mankind and his connection to or origin from god-like alien entities will engender the masses to follow him into the biggest deception in history." – Chuck Missler & Mark Eastman, Alien Encounters [21]
Conclusion
Does all this sound strange? You bet it does, but what could be stranger than Genesis 6:1-4 or Daniel 2:43 anyway? A great deal of wisdom and biblical knowledge may be needed in the future if they were ever to make a more official appearance here in our world. Our planet would no doubt be plunged into some weird worship of these creatures as they did in ancient times, and all will be “explained” in accordance to the new-age ET philosophy that according to ancient manuscripts were only used to enslave the human population and keep them in some weird conformity by the practice of human sacrifice. There was never any attempt by these so called “gods” and “demi-gods” to truly help the human cause along into a more independent and prosperous future.
You can be sure of one thing, if they ever do make a more official appearance into our modern day world, they will REQUIRE our conformity to THEIR way of thinking and it will be by force. As Genesis 6:2 says: “they TOOK wives of all they desired and chose”! It was not an option. Neither will it be an option in those days for you.

What Does the Bible Say About Ghosts?

In the last article, Ghost and Demons by Thomas Shea, we got a brief secular look at this subject. But as Christians we know that demons exist because a great deal of Jesus ministry was His encounter with them and His divine deliverance from these annoying little pebbles in our shoes. But what does the bible actually say about ghosts? Well, virtually nothing, except a few New Testament references to His disciples thinking He is one…
When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It's a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. Matthew 14:26, NIV
“Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” Luke 24:39, NIV
Jesus did not deny the existence of ghosts; He simply said He wasn’t one. So really, what in the world are they? The Greek word used in each of these verses is “fantasma” which simple means “appearance” or “apparition, specter”. Well I know that wasn’t helpful, so let’s start with what they are not and work our way backwards from there.
“Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” Hebrews 9:27. This is what happens to a person’s spirit after death; it is judgment.
The most well known account of a ghost in the bible actually takes place in the Old Testament. The Witch of Endor, great study subject by the way, is contacted by King Saul whose is in disguise to summon the spirit of the Prophet Samuel because he is just having a very rough go at war and doesn’t know what to do. So the Witch does her little incantations and this is what happens….
When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!"
The king said to her, "Don't be afraid. What do you see?"
The woman said, "I see a spirit coming up out of the ground."
"What does he look like?" he asked.
"An old man wearing a robe is coming up," she said.
Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.
Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?"
"I am in great distress," Saul said. "The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do."
Samuel said, "Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy? The LORD has done what he predicted through me. The LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. 1 Samuel 28:12-18
This account makes me laugh mostly because the Witch is as surprised and as horrified to see Samuel as any necromancer could be! But what is most important here is not that she was able to do it, but that Samuels spirit had to be summoned to come up. He wasn’t just roaming around; he was in his place of rest; Abraham’s bosom to be exact.
Now we are in the time of the New Testament; Jesus has already stormed the gates of Hell and retrieved those that belong to Him.
This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men." (What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?) Ephesians 4:8-9
So what happens to the dead after the New Testament? We see in Hebrews 9:27 that they face judgment. The outcome of this judgment is either heaven (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23) or hell (Matthew 25:46; Luke 16:22-24). The Catholics believe in a purgatory or holding place until judgment, but again, this does not leave any room for simply wandering around and haunting cemeteries, taverns and houses.
The Bible clearly teaches that there ARE spirit beings that can appear in our physical world. Those are angels and demons. Holy Angels are righteous and good, while the followers of Satan are evil and deceptive. In fact we are told that Satan “masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14) in order to “kill, steal and destroy” (John 10:10). It really should go without saying that these so called ghosts that go around causing mischief, but mostly scaring the life out of the people who encounter them, are in fact demons. Occasionally you will hear of one or two that seem to be harmless, but again, don’t let first impressions fool you.
There are many TV shows out there chasing ghosts around for the viewing pleasure of the audience. I think it is mostly curiosity of the unknown that make some of them so popular. In shows like Crossing Over with John Edward, featuring a modern day medium, he claims to speak to the dead loved ones of those in his audience. As heart wrenching as some of those moments are on his show and how accurate some of his “contacts” seem to be, it is something God tells us to avoid.
One very poignant question that I am often asked is: If these spirits that are contacted by these necromancers or by these ghost chasers are actually demons, how do they know the intimate details of that particular dead person’s life?
What makes going to a medium so appealing is their so called ability to contact someone in whom you had a deep abiding love and very significant attachment to, such as a father, mother, grandparents, sisters, brothers and even our dearly departed children.
Unlike this biblical account of Samuel, the truth is our loved ones are not the ones that are actually contacted. The demon’s that are contacted in most cases are the familiar spirits that lived their sad little existence either inside or around the dead person throughout their lifetime influencing their decisions and learning the most intimate details of their life. I’m sorry if that is disturbing to some of you, but that is the truth.
Either by research or contact with a medium, most apparitions of ghosts are mistakenly identified to be a dead person that lived around or near their place of encounter. We should be assured they are not, they are only demons seeking to deceive and possibly find a new host. It is not uncommon for people who encounter these creatures to feel like the ghost/demon desires to posses them and in some instances, an exorcism of some sort needs to be conducted as someone living around or near the point of contact has physically and emotionally changed indicating it has moved into someone else.
These creatures are not something you should mess with. If you or someone you know is having problems with a ghost/demon, then contacting someone very knowledgeable in this area is very helpful. Most importantly though, you should never invite a medium or psychic into your home or place of business to rid you of this intruder; only those who are true believers in Christ can safely and permanently rid you of this pest.
If we truly trust in God and really believe in the Word of God, we know our loved ones are safely on the other side.

Ghosts and Demons

There are some people who do not believe in ghosts, while maintaining a strong belief in demons. The question many people have is "Is there a difference in ghosts and demons?" In this article we will look at the two subjects and the differences in the two.
While ghosts are believed to be the apparition or appearance of people that are no longer living, demons are widely believed to be angels formerly of God or "fallen angels". Ghosts are not generally thought of as having an influence on the balance of good and evil in society, while demons are. Demons are deeply rooted in religion and mythology and can be traced all the way back to the ancient Sumerians. Ancient tablets told stories of demons, demonic possession and contained prayers to gods asking to be protected from demons. The Sumerians believed that all illness was caused by "sickness demons". Demons are widely believed to have the ability to inhabit the bodies and assume control of humans and in some cultures, animals. This event requires an exorcism to aid in the removal of demons. While ghosts are believed to be "channeled" willingly by mediums or psychics, humans are said to have absolutely no control over demonic possession.
What many people are unaware of is the fact that only a certain number of priests in the catholic religion are authorized to perform such exorcisms and that those exorcisms require approval of a bishop before they can be performed. The Catholic Church is widely known for it's skepticism of alleged possessions. Which raises an interesting question? Why has the number of priests authorized to perform these rituals been so dramatically increased over recent years? What used to be only a handful of such priests, has grown to over 350 in recent years. Is demonic possession on the rise? Is there a growing evil among us?
Most skeptics blame mental conditions for alleged demonic possessions, although some events surrounding some cases have baffled everyone. One would assume that our best hope is that there are simply more crazy people around these days, but something tells me that there might be something else at work.
In closing, we can assume that although ghosts may exist, they are not directly affecting our minds or civilization, while the entities known as demons that have been blamed for the terrible things in society for thousands of years, seem to getting blamed a lot more often in our day and age. So are ghosts and demons real? There is no definitive answer to that question but people have their opinions and will continue to do the research for thousands of years to come.

The Spirit of Fear is a Tormenting Spirit!

Fear is a normal, natural flight response to a danger in our surroundings. But what happens when it is something more, when it is an emotion we feel simply getting into our car, leaving our house or being in a crowd. Are these feelings of fear normal?
The answer to that is no!. This kind of fear is tormenting and it does not come from our loving Father, God.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7, KJV
One of the first and foremost door openers to other demonic spirits is the spirit of fear. This spirit can take on many forms, but its intentions are clear, no matter what kind of spirit of fear it may be. It intends to keep you from fulfilling the destiny that God has on your life; from living a joyful, spirit led existence where you give to others out of the overflow of love in your life. It will keep you awake with nightmares. It will keep you from leaving your home or overcoming past emotional and physical wounds. For example, the fear of throwing something away, it could be anything from collectibles, clothes or simply trash. These people have been labeled “hoarders” and when you meet one, they are unmistakable. And for them getting rid of their stuff (even trash) is tantamount to removing a limb. It is deeply traumatic and overwhelmingly scary for them. This fear enters through trauma, most often the loss of a loved one, but it could be any trauma that can bring this particular spirit of fear upon a person.
Of course we can’t forget our inherited spirits. Just like the genes we inherit from our parents, we also can inherit demonic spirits. Like a seed planted in our flesh, at birth we have a fear. Our parents indulge it knowing that they too suffered from the same stifling fear and in their worldly compassion, continue to allow it to fester and grow. Some wise parents know that to overcome fear you must face it down and they help their child push through the fear into victory.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18, KJV
What exactly is perfect love? Of course we all know it to be Jesus; the one who died on the cross to set us free from these spirits, but it is also Him moving through us in love to other people. For instance, if you are selfish and indulge your carnal flesh with things such as lying, cheating, stealing, gossiping, and being manipulative you will also reap what you sow in fear. Sin, any kind of sin, attracts demonic spirits and the spirit of fear is usually the first one through the door. That is why Paul tells us to not be anxious for anything. Anxiety is a form of fear.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:6-8, NIV
Joyce Meyer wrote an incredibly insightful book called the “Battlefield of the Mind”. She does not come right out and directly say that what you are dealing with is a demonic spirit, probably an attempt to stay within the mainstream Christian sensitivity; however her solution to the problem drives them out. She gives some very practical solutions to overcoming the everyday issues that control our lives. And for most of us, that can be fear. Of course, what she deals with is our thoughts. In the verse above, it tells us to think on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy. How much of your day do you actually spend thinking about whatever it is that you are afraid of? How much of your day do you spend pondering the ugliness of this world? Be it politics, violence and the horrors of what is happening to our children in this country and around the world. How much time do you spend thinking about the latest horror flick you just watched?
Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Psalm 4:23, NIV
We are told to guard our hearts and this is one of the most overlooked aspects of our Christian walk. We assume that if we are Christians then the work is already done. We only have to “love” Jesus and maybe our neighbor if they are not too nasty, and we are home free. Well you may get into heaven with this attitude but you will NOT reap the rewards of a victorious life. A victorious life is one that not only hears the Word, but puts it into practice. It is someone who searches the scriptures daily and applies it to their everyday life. They give love to others without any ulterior motive. This person also “guards” their heart and their mind from all unsavory images, music and avoids the kind of people who could lead them astray.
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' Matthew 15:18
Out of your mouth come the issues of your heart. If they do not give honor to God, then they open the door to “unclean” spirits. It really is a simple as that. So if you are struggling with a spirit of fear, any kind of fear, I would encourage you to begin by “taking all thoughts captive” (2 Corinthians 10:5) and meditate night and day on “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
This is the best place to start. Then follow that up by facing down your fear, whatever that may be. Get some friends and go for a nice long drive, or over that scary bridge, or clean out your house, walk through a crowded mall and maybe sky dive. Okay, sky dive might be a little extreme but go for it. This is your life, GO LIVE IT to the fullest. Don’t let some stupid spirit of fear hold you back from enjoying everything God has to offer. And if you have done all of these things and nothing seems to be working, get help. Find a deliverance minister and let them lead you into victory. But first and foremost, do it, even if you are afraid!

The Coward (Fear)

II Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control." We do not want to be driven by this fawning, craven, cringing fear. We want to have these demons driven out of us in Jesus' Name.
Exodus 15:11 talks about the right kind of fear that we should have. It is a reverent fear of our Lord. "Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor, doing wonders?"
Demons can transfer to us from other people. Therefore, we must be careful who we stand around and what we listen to. Deuteronomy 20:8 talks about this, "And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, What man is fearful and fainthearted? Let him return to his house, lest [because of him] his brethren's [minds and] hearts faint as does his own."
Again in Deuteronomy 28:58 we see the reverent fear we should have of our Lord. "If you will not be watchful to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may [reverently] fear this glorious and fearful name [and presence] - THE LORD YOUR GOD -" Chapter 28 of Deuteronomy gives us the curses and blessings of God. In this verse the Lord says that we must obey the commandments. If we do not, the curses come upon us and opens the door for the demons to enter us. Disobedience to God's Word allows the Coward demons to enter us.
To be able to do the work of the Lord we must drive out the demons of the Coward. In Judges 7:3 we see the Lord telling the fearful and cowards to turn back. "So now proclaim in the ears of the men, saying, Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him turn back and depart from Mount Gilead. And 22,000 of the men returned, but 10,000 remained."
In the Strong's Concordance the meanings of the words fearful and cowardice mean: frighten, made fearful, dread, faint hearted and trembling. These are the demons that are in the family of the Coward that drive us to be so afraid.
The Lord wants us to have a strong heart and not be afraid. He told us this in Isaiah 35:4 "Say to those who are of a fearful and hasty heart, Be strong, fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance; with the recompense of God He will come and save you. Need we say more. The Lord is on our side and will avenge us. Praise the Lord! The Strong's Concordance for fearful in this verse is cause to make fearful.
Now let's see what Jesus said in the New Testament about fear and cowardice.
Matthew 8:26 "And He said to them, Why are you timid and afraid, O you of little faith? Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great and wonderful calm (a perfect peaceableness)."
Mark 4:40 "He said to them, Why are you so timid and fearful? How is it that you have no faith (no firmly relying trust)?
Ouch, that hurts. We have no faith? That's what Jesus said. To have faith we must drive the demons of timidity and fear and cowardice out of us.
We are now in the end-times. Like it or not, we see destruction, plagues, pestilence everywhere. My friend, if it is not close to the time for Jesus to return seeing all the destruction around us then we are in for a very frightful experience. Aids, floods, cancer, murder, abortion, earthquakes, etc. If this isn't the end-time, what great destructions will we see?
In Luke 21:11 Jesus tells of the end-times. "There will be mighty and violent earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences (plagues: malignant and contagious or infectious epidemic diseases which are deadly and devastating); and there will be sights of terror and great signs from heaven."
In Hebrews, the writer tells us that if we keep on sinning we have a fearful end. Verse 27: "[There is nothing left for us then] but a kind of awful and fearful prospect and expectation of divine judgment and the fury of burning wrath and indignation which will consume those who put themselves in opposition [to God]." We must drive the demons out that cause us to sin. The fear that comes with this scripture is terror, exceedingly fear. Hebrews 10:31 says, "It is a fearful (formidable and terrible) thing to incur the divine penalties and be cast into the hands of the living God! We, as a people and nation, must repent for the sins we have committed and allowed. Leviticus says that we must confess our sins and iniquities and the sins and iniquities of our fathers. If not, this gives the demons legal ground to stay in us.
Last but not least, Revelation 21:8 says, "But as for the cowards (fearful) and ignoble and the contemptible and the cravenly lacking in courage and the cowardly submissive, and as for the unbelieving and faithless, and as for the depraved and defiled with abominations, and as for murderers and the lewd and adulterous and the practicers of magic arts and the idolaters (those who give supreme devotion to anyone or anything other than God) and all liars (those who knowingly convey untruth by word or deed) - [all of these shall have] their part in the lake that blazes with fire and brimstone. This is the second death."
Well, that says it all. I don't want any demon in me that will cause me to take part in the second death. I want to be free of the demon of the Coward. If that is your prayer also then below is a prayer and a list of demons to be driven out.
According to Leviticus 26:40 I confess and repent on my behalf and on behalf of my ancestors for ten generations for the sins and iniquities of being a coward and not trusting in and obeying the commandments of the Lord. In Jesus' Name, I break the curse of fear and the curse of the Coward. I break the bondage of the spirit of slavery to fear and replace it with the spirit of adoption according to Romans 8:15 and 16. In Jesus' Name I root out all doorkeepers of fear.
Now cast OUT the below demons in the name of Jesus, as noted on our basic web page.
Based on the Scriptures above, fear is a sin since it keeps you from going to Heaven. If you haven't yet cast out the spirit of fear, then you need to ask the Lord to forgive you of being fearful every time you get afraid.

Fawning fear, Craven fear, Cringing fear, Frighten, Made fearful, Dread, Faint hearted, Trembling, Fearful of heart, Hasty heart, Unbelief, No faith, Timidity, Faithlessness, Be afraid, Frightening thing, Terrific portent, Fearful sight, Terror, Terrible, Exceeding fear, Formidable fear, Be put in fear, Alarm, Uncourageous, Unholy dread, Dismay, Funk, Scariness, Fright, Fear and trembling, Nervousness, Apprehend, Shock, Weakling, Lose courage, Heartless, Phobias, Panic fear, Doubt, Fear stricken, Trauma, Fear that causes heart attacks, Fear that paralyzes, Fear that causes fainting, Cause to make fearful, Spirit of the Coward, Spirit of Slavery to fear.

October Begins “Demonic Awareness” Month

As we do every year, we set aside the month of October to help everyone understand the enemy’s plans to disrupt and destroy our lives. Most Christians believe that just because they are a Christian and belong to Jesus their lives are off limits when it comes to demonic activity. Because of the extreme lack of knowledge in this area within the Christian community, some Christians who do come to realize that a number of difficulties in their lives are directly caused by demonic activity are often afraid to seek help or even share what is going on in their lives for fear they will be judged harshly. Sometimes they turn to mediums and spiritists to help them solve their problems, but unfortunately when you invite someone into your life who does not believe in Christ, the problem will return, can get worse or a different and more serious problem will arise. This year, I will be concentrating on some of the supernatural activities of the enemy and how he uses this to scare us and to maintain a foothold in our lives.
For those of you who don’t believe that Satan can come after us because we are Christians, please take this verse to heart…
Then the dragon [Satan] was enraged at the woman [Mary] and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring—those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus. Revelation 12:17
Many say that this verse is about the end times, but I strongly disagree. This verse comes after the birth of Jesus and Satan’s activity has been increasing since that time. He also knows his time is short and I have personally seen over the past twenty years an increase and an outright acceptance of witchcraft and the occult by the mainstream public. Nothing, other than sexual activity outside of marriage, can increase demonic activity in your life faster and be more menacing than dabbling in the occult. Dabbling in the occult, even innocently, can invite a whole host of demons into your life as well as the lives of your loved ones.
I have personally witnessed first hand the damage that demonic spirits can do when one involves themselves in witchcraft or even associates with someone who has been involved in witchcraft. The spirit that usually enters first is the spirit of fear or some form of fear. It enters quietly and is barely noticed….at first. This spirit can take over and it opens the door to let other spirits in and there is very little the person can do if they are unaware of its presence.
For most of us, it begins with watching scary things on TV or in the movies…
Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23
This “guarding” of our hearts is one thing we very rarely consider. We think, “hey everyone else is doing it, how bad can it be? If there were something wrong with it we would know it by now….right?” Well truth be told, guarding your heart doesn’t work that way, there aren’t little road signs pointing you in the right direction or alerting you to danger. This “guarding of your heart” requires a great deal of biblical knowledge and diligence on your part. It is also something that only Christians are called to do so following the crowd will ALWAYS get you into trouble. Guarding your heart keeps the enemy from getting a foot hold in your mind and more often than not it begins with causing you to be afraid of something. When you are controlled by fear (any kind of fear) you are no longer controlled by the loving and guiding hand of the Holy Spirit.
The spirit of fear is what we will be discussing in my next post. This spirit is one that has transcended centuries. It goes before almost every other spirit as the one that opens the door for other spirits. It keeps us paralyzed and confused. It keeps us from seeing the true work of God. It blinds us to reality and keeps us from hearing the truth.
